How
is it feel like when your own life is suddenly taken away by God (e.g. death)?
Well, that’s how life works, so deal with it, but how is it when some humans take
your life, your freedom, for the sake of their greediness? You must’ve heard
about the Black Race slavery that happened in America, and that’s the same
thing. 173 years later, McQueen visualized this sensitive issue through his
sensational 2013 Golden Globe Award winning the best drama movie entitled 12 Years a Slave.
Where
freedom comes from? God or Government? What makes you identify as a free human
being? Apparently, Solomon, a free African American man had to live suppressedly as
a slave for 12 years before he could finally prove his official letter
regarding his freedom state. He was kidnapped and sold to work in cotton
plantation for white masters, where his “free man” status didn’t even get acknowledged
and couldn’t help him at all. He had to dedicate himself shamelessly as a
white’s slave before he met his savior which “of course” also a white man who promised him to get his “official
free declaration letter”. Now, you get the idea where freedom comes from in
this evil play.
This movie will arouse your critical thinking and sense of humanity, from its two hours duration which packed with the daily
life of a slave to “regain” his freedom. This is an
obscene reflection of a true event in the past, and steadily, yet blatantly, McQueen portrayed how the
state of freedom is (or actually not) everything a man can have, so overall I'd agree with the score of 8/10.
