*This is a response essay regarding Shirley Jackson's short story entitled Charles

Unfortunately, this bad memory of mine couldn’t even recall my childhood time. I do remember some of my major mistakes as an innocent child, but what makes Laurie and I different is what a straightforward kid I was, well at least from the fragments of my perspective as a child. Surely, reading Charles by Shirley Jackson brings back the nostalgic and also some other feelings of having the perspective of a reckless and joyful little kid, but the real question for me is am I stopped ‘being Charles’?
Charles as the epitome of naughty really struck me, and that’s what I like the most from this short-story, even though I do hate Laurie’s parents who made us think that way. This kind of thinking, making someone as the epitome of something, is what human like to do, and that is very interesting from the social point of view. As the story goes on, the parents even blinded from their own judgement and insecurities of Charles’ influence, and even stopped asking Laurie what he did at school. Instead, they just listen to Laurie’s endless narrative of Charles, and that is why I don’t like the parents, for being very blind to Charles who is ironically their precious son.
Now, the term ‘being Charles’ is somewhat intrigues me, not as a child (because I myself really couldn’t even remember how was it), but more into nowadays ‘me’. The best time I’m ‘being Charles’ was in junior high school, the time everyone goes through puberty is the time for ‘Charles’ to show up in some people. So, aside from my vague childhood, I was ‘being Charles’ more in the pre-puberty than I ever was in childhood. Maybe I am a late-bloomer, in fact I’m still trying to understand ‘myself’ these days and ‘being Charles’ once in a while. Even though I’m not exactly sure, am I just ‘being Charles’ or am I just reckless and emotionally unstable. But, I think the problem is some people in this world are also still in ‘Charles mode’, and what’s worst is that maybe they don’t even realize it.
The point that I’m trying to say is childhood is just a flash in the eye, but unfortunately some people couldn’t get out of it easily. Since the responsible feeling is somehow little or even nowhere to be seen in children, some people tend to nostalgia to those days and being realistic, but some other people just couldn’t resist the urge and let their Charles out. So, maybe by reading this Charles by Shirley Jackson some people can reflect not only to themselves, but also the societies around them.

In nowadays technology-based era, I do forget the last time I written a note for someone. Well, maybe in highschool, but even though I remembered about the notes, I am pretty sure that it is not the type that you can make into a poem. But, for me the poem feels like bringing some kind of nostalgia.

I sense the apology in a quite interesting way; sincere, simple, but playful. In the end, my mind visualized someone who asked their significant other's forgiveness, trying to be innocent since they know they will be forgiven anyway. From what I see, that is why they chose to write a note instead, and not having a conversation directly. That is what I meant by bringing the good old times back, just like whenever I had a fight with my friends and too scared to talk, I would subtly buy their favorite food and wrote a simple “I'm sorry” in a sticky note. The thing is, this kind of apology on a single note is not the kind of communication you can have with everyone. I would write it for my bestfriend and close friends, different way for parents and colleagues. By giving notes, I get the feeling of the closeness of a relationship, but the playful one, just like my bestfriend and me.The problem is, nowaday's people like to do everything with the help of technology, so when we do 'manual' things, I get the sincere feeling of the efforts. Why don't we just use message, call, or any instant way? Because there is this guilty feeling, by waiting for the person read the note, we don't have to be the one who approach and said “hey, I made a mistake”, instead it tells “I know that I'm wrong, and now I can't face you with what I have done, so please forgive me and after that we're going to have a good time again”. I found it interesting, the way I can visualized the closeness of a relationship through a note, and at least that's what my memory told me to think about; the same feeling that I got whenever I have to apologize for my stupid act in the old days.

That's what I like from this poem, a simple communication; a simple apology which hoping for a simple understanding, in a fun and supportive relationship.

And so, it would be my response if I were the the 'you' on the poem:

I do
thought of
ignoring

but the
sweet
sugar-coated
donuts
from yesterday
solve it
all

I
guess
I'll get
more
next time

I like being alone, so I often sit in a cafe or library and read by myself. One day, I decided to try a new cafe downtown and brought my book as usual. There weren’t many people when i came in the morning, so I thought it would be nice to stay there for a while. I didn’t pay much attention to the cafe, but it looked clearly new and fresh. Because I don’t like being notice by people I just quickly chose the nearest table, and ordered a cup of coffe and a cheese cake.

When my orders came, somehow I started to feel uncomfortable. From the corner of my right eye, I could feel that someone was staring at me, but because I was afraid that it would be someone that i knew and too shy to talk anyway, so I just ignored it and tried to focus on the book. But, sometime in a while my eyes just caught that someone, and I still felt disturbed.

Then, I gathered all my guts, and turned my head to my right side to that someone. Apparently, there was a wide mirror on my right side, and that someone was only me, my own reflection.

Some say love is just greed. Love is just a selfish feelings for not being alone and wanting to be love wholly. Pablo Neruda’s poem entitled “If You Forget Me” may conveys those statements through its metaphors and words choices. Neruda is famous for his melancholy love poems, but despite that he who was also a politician had made some poems regarding many aspects. There are many contrary about this poem’s meaning between love and politics. But, maybe it has dual meanings, and in this case we will see it through the love topics by its romantic and dramatic stanzas. The poem is about someone, the “I”, who tells his/her lover about their feeling and wanting to emphasize about one thing. Neruda takes us to a deeper thought about the universal and relatable feeling of love, and telling it through his flowery metaphors and words which may also conveys the two statements above.
What is love and how is it works? Before going to the main point, Neruda shows that actually it’s a simple yet complicated thing that everyone can easily tell. “You know how this is:” (Stanza 2). Implying that everyone knows how it will goes, and may be relatable to everyone, especially who has ever been in love. Through his flowery words, Neruda starts telling how’s love works. “If I touch near the fire the impalpable ash or the wrinkle body of the log” (Stanza 6-9). The fire implies to the passion of love, hot and restless, meanwhile the ash and log are more about the feeling. Ash is impalpable which means it’s the result of the passionate love, everything will and may be gone slowly just like the ash. But, there’s a log which is implying the feelings from both people that can refresh the love and keep it burning so it won’t die, and that’s how the love works. Then, he shows how someone is in love. “Everything carries me to you as if everything that exists, aromas, light, metals”. (Stanza 10-15). It shows that if someone falls in love, the surroundings, everything that we think, in the end will be about that person. It uses of parabole of the word “everything”, because usually love makes people crazy and nonsense, everything other than that other person won’t be important. We can note that the use of words such as aromas, light, and metals, which are some earth’s elements relate to the feeling of love as a nature phenomena, a natural feelings of human. He also shows how beautiful is this feeling. “ If I look at the crystal moon, at the red branch of the slow autumn at my window”. (Stanza 4-5). The additions of crystal before the moon, shows how if someone falls in love everything becomes beautiful and romantic. The description of slow autumn with the fireplace from the stanza before shows how calm and warm the feeling of love is. “The next stanza continues what’s someone hoping in love. “Were little boats that sail toward those isles of yours that wait for me”. (Stanza 13-15). It also shows that the struggle of someone, so the feeling can be recognizes by that other person. “Those isles of yours” represents the other person’s heart which this someone assumes he/she is waiting and also has the same feeling. It can be also relatable to everyone, because if we fall in love, we want that person to have a feeling for us too. Finally, Neruda stirs that feeling into a somehow threatening situation. “Well, now, if little by little you stop loving me I shall stop loving you little by little”. (Stanza 16-18). After Neruda shows how someone falls in love happily, the uses of “well, now” emphasize that even though it’s a sincere feeling, there still a “but” in it. It seems that actually there’s something hidden in it, which is the feeling of wanting to accepting it back, so it’s not completely sincere. But, actually it shoudn’t be too shocking, because from the very first Neruda has been giving us some hints. If we’ve been aware from the title of this poem “If You Forget Me”, actually it relates to the very first stanza which says, “I want you to know one thing”. It may be a hint into this poem’s meaning. The sentences in that first stanza may makes people wondering what is that “one thing” actually, but now we can see it as what will happen if I forget you, which is sounds threatening. After that, Neruda explains more about what will happen in stanzas 26-31, “and you decide to leave me at the shore of the heart where I have roots, remember that on that day, on that hour”, which imply to how’s love works as a personal thing. The uses of the word “remember” emphasize the point, which as its mentioned before as somehow threatening. The stanza “that on that day, on that hour”, also emphasizes that it’s not just a simple thing, but a real serious thing, a real warning if the other person forgets about him/her. From the beginning, Neruda has been using the metaphors such as isles, boats, sails, and now shore, to tells about the feelings between two people. So, this stanzas simply explains what’s going to happen if the other person’s decides to leave this someone, regardless of his/her heart which has been sincere to love, as for the metaphor “roots”. Then, “I shall lift my arms and my roots will set off to seek another land” (Stanza 32-34). My arms and my roots are this someone’s feelings toward the other person, and “will seek another land” as the word “land” that implies the heart, so no matter what happens if a person between those two people won’t have the feeling equally, then it won’t work. The word “shall” then implies, so why bother and try hard if it won’t works anyway. The last part of stanzas, also shows the other conditions, “But, if each day, each hour, you feel that you are destined for me”(Stanza 35-38) “In me all that fire is repeated, in me nothing is extinguished or forgotten” (Stanza 43-44). Neruda uses the metaphor “fire” for love since the beginning, so it means that if the other person realizes for returning the love equally, this someone will love her/him again like before, as if nothing has happened. The stanzas 40-41, “If each day a flower climbs up to your lips to seek me”, shows how if the other person realize the need of this feeling through beautiful metaphors, again to show how actually love is a beautiful natural feeling of a human. Until the very last, Neruda explains why is this someone have this one thing if the other person forgets about him/her, which is the main point of this poem. “Oh my love, ah my own”. (Stanza 42). This stanza is telling that love is must be returns equally, by the word “my own” Neruda may also agrees to the statement “love is greed” because it may be implies the selfishness of love. It seems like saying my love is my own feeling, but your feeling towards me will also be my love. Neruda then tells us the general reason through stanza: “My love feeds on your love, beloved”. (Stanza 45). Which is actually that one thing is about, every love is based on another’s love, and that’s how love works as a feeling and surely relationship. To balance the passions of love, it must be returns equally because it “feeds” one another, such as the “log” from the previous stanza. From the very beginning of the poem, Neruda tells about what is love, how is it feels, and how is it works, and in the end shows what is the actual one important thing, which also in touch with the statement “love is greed”.
Neruda successfully tells about the feeling of love through some easy yet romantic metaphors, and even make the readers can also feel and recall that feeling. He shows love as a natural and beautiful feeling by using nature elements as metaphors. It’s a simple yet meaningful poem, and tells about what seems like a simple feeling, but actually much more complicated than whats on the surface. At the end, maybe not as a whole meaning, but it seems that Neruda agrees to the statement that love is also a selfish feeling, because actually that’s how it works.

A girl and a boy are sitting quietly on the backyard of the girl’s house in a small and deserted, yet a very beautiful village. They’re sitting next to each other, and no words come out from their mouth since at least half an hour ago, and the solitude is already filling up the dark starry sky. It’s summer night, and the wind is barely disturbs them, it decides to stop dancing lately. The only sound coming is from the girl’s radio playing a soft-folk-dreamy melody from Sigur Ros, an Icelandic band, in a very small volume. “No need for ruining the solitude, just let it be the background music for tonight,” she thinks with her face lifts up toward the sky as if waiting a miracle to happen. Meanwhile, the boy is sitting next to her, reading a novel solemnly with his beautiful dark brown eyes. They keep doing that for a few minutes, and it feels like the air isn’t moving anymore. Until the girl notices something in the sky that makes the air perforces to continue sweeping away. “Woah.. Look at that!” she whispers, she doesn’t want to break the solitude herself, and gently shakes the boy’s hand while still looking up to the sky. He looks up and finds some shooting stars are falling into the earth. “Quick! Make a wish!” the girl already puts her hands together and closes her eyes seriously. He looks at her with astonishment, and somehow he can’t help but giggle. “Do you still believe that? Nowadays? Seriously?” he looks at her smilingly. “What? I DO believe in miracles,” she continues facing upward and pointing to the sky “JUST LOOK.” Tens of shooting stars hurriedly fall into the earth, decorating that peaceful summer night sky, they can’t help but amazed by that view.
“Why do you make a wish over that sad things?” asks the boy when the night sky starts getting still again.
“What do you mean by sad things? It’s one of the most beautiful things you can see. You can’t see meteor shower everyday.” She starts to feel annoyed.
“Do you know the story behind those falling meteors?” the boy says calmly.
“Of course, we learnt it in school, DUH?!” he can be this annoying sometimes, she thinks.
“No. Not that kind of story, I mean the myth story, not the fact.”
She gathers her emotion again, “Oh, um, no I guess.”
“Okay then, would you like to hear it?”
 “Don’t make me waiting.”
He coughs a little ,“So, the story goes like this.”

“Once upon a time, there was a prince in the Perseus constellation named Perses. He was the son of King Perseus and Queen Andromeda, and the first of his six younger siblings. He was very handsome but also beautiful at the same time, with his long gold hair, a fair complexion, and the eyes coloured with all the colors in the universe. He was very wise, charismatic, and brave. His only passion is to travel around another constellations and found himself in another galaxies, from it he got lots of friends and acquintances. Everyone who had met him liked him, since he was so kind, smart, and charming.”
“Years and years had passed, until when he was on his way to come back home, he decided to visit Gemini Constellation for a while. There, he saw something that he couldn’t imagine before, the feeling that he didn’t know existed, and it came to him just like he was struck by lightning. He met Geminid, the princess of Gemini Constellation, and just like the snap of a hand he fell in love. She was, indeed, very beautiful with her dreamy eyes, which had the colour that we, human, doesn’t even know exist, a colour that beyond our eyes could see. Her silver long hair was like the wave of the ocean, and whenever she moved he could see as if it was dancing naturally. Her body was perfect, but it seemed small and not very tough. Then, he got to know her more, and Geminid was also captivated by him from the first time they met. For an instant, they not only fell in love by their looks, but they also found themselves matched each other. Their soul was connected easily, they filled up each other’s soul, they knew they were meant to be, they were soulmate. Geminid was a very delicate woman, so she could balance Perses’ short-temper. He was very brave, and Geminid who was a shy woman before started to open up herself. Then, he took Geminids home and married her, and they became the Prince and Princess of Perseus Constellation. Her kindness and friendliness got her became close to Perses’ six younger siblings, which the children of Perseus and Andromeda was called Perseid. They became really close, and felt as if Geminid was their real sister, they loved her.”
“After they got married, Perses wanted to show Geminid the universe, he asked her to go travelling the universe just like he used to do. So, they traveled together, but more far than Perses had ever been when he still traveled alone. Geminid loved beauty, she loved things that had aesthetics, and as they traveled around the universe Geminid often amazed by how beautiful it was. Because, she was very shy before she met Perses, and only stayed around Gemini Constellation. Until years had passed, on their way home they strolled along the outer and inner planets area, which is our home, earth. When they got near earth, Geminid suddenly gasped, and struck with amazement. While pulling Perses’ hand that she was holding, she hurriedly got closer to earth. “Oh my, I’ve never seen such a beautiful planet like that! That one seems so unique! Look at that, Perses! It has blue and green colour covered the whole planets, isn’t it just looks very beautiful?” She was really amazed, with her dreamy eyes that changed more brightly, as if  humans when we saw a very cute puppy or kitten.” Perses felt happy when he saw her like that, he couldn’t help but smiling. “Yes, it’s very unique. We haven’t seen planet that seems so unique like that one. I felt that somehow, there’s something different in this planet, isn’t it, Gem?” Geminid kept smiling and staying still, but suddenly as if she realized something, she turned to Perses and said, “I want to go there!”. “NO” Perses quickly forbad her, “YOU CAN’T”. Geminid already know he would answer that, but this time she couldn’t hold her pretension. “But....Per, I want to know how is this planet looks like from inside, down there it must be very beautiful”. “I know it would be fun living on a planet, but Gem..” he somehow felt confused. She took Perses’ hands, hold it gently, and looked him in the eyes, “Perses, I never ever asked you or your family for something, not even the smallest things. It’s because I already feel happy with you, so I don’t need anything else. But, this one, I beg you, I just want to visit that planet one time, only one time, my Perses.” Her words made him feeling guilty, but he knew that they couldn’t do it.“I’m sorry, Gem, but you know the rules. We, as space creatures, the guardian of interstellars, can not disturb or get in touch with anything that inside any planets. It’s our sacred rule, and you know as a prince and princess we have to keep it like that.” He saw that it was the first time he ever seen Geminid sad like that. She kept looking to earth while slightly bit her bottom lip, but suddenly turned to Perses and hugged him tightly. “I love you, Perses, you know that, forever”. Perses could feel something strange with her, he knew that she said it genuinely as always, but this one, it seemed like she was trying to say goodbye.”
“When they were hugging time stopped, not exaggerated, but literally. In the blink of an eye, Geminid pushed him and quickly went into earth. Perses tried to reach her, but he was too late, Geminid already fell into earth’s atmosphere and became what we called shooting stars. Perses couldn’t break the rule, as the son of a constellation king he couldn’t do that for good sake, he was going to be his father’s heir. Deep inside, he wanted to follow Geminid, but he couldn’t risk himself to go down to earth, because he didn’t know what would happen. He was confused between his wisdom and ego. Then, he got depressed, he cried his heart out, while standing near the earth, weeping for his grief. He thought that maybe, Geminid would come out from Earth and comeback to him, as his one and only soulmate. He waited, until he decided to tell the news to his family, and came home. When he arrived, the news made everyone heartbroken, also for his six siblings who had loved her as real sister. Perses became a different person, his eyes that used to shine brightly had gone away changed into darkness. His gaze was like the black hole, reflected nothing, but pain and grief. The constellation where they lived became gloomy without Geminid’s presence,  and so was Perses’ siblings felt nearly as sad as him, but nothing could ever sadder than himself.”
“One day, one of his siblings, Mestor, out of nowhere had the idea maybe if they sent their troops to search Geminid on earth they could persuade her to come back home. Perses, who was depressed agreed with that idea, so he  started sending hundreds of troops to find her. It was summer on earth, in the middle of July and August to be exact, when hundreds of his troops started coming to earth. Just like what we saw lately, the meteor shower that you made a wish before, and we called it Perseid Meteor Shower. Even though, he thought that maybe Geminid would never came back to him, Perses selfishly kept sending his troops, he still believe that someday Geminid will be found. So, every time when the year comes to an end on December he would sent his troops again, and from our scientists named it as Geminid Meteor Shower, and just like Perseid Meteor Shower it will happens every year. Because, sadly there is one thing they didn’t know, that Geminid had died from the very first she fell down here. Her body was small, you know when something falls into earth, there are layers of atmosphere in the sky, and anything will be burnt by it. That’s what happen when a small thing, small like Geminid, a meteor fell, they just become dusts, or in this case i can say star dusts.  So, she never even stepped on earth, because she already died on her way. Whereas, big meteor that succeed get to earth just become a crater, they will hardly arrive on earth’s surface, and nowadays you can see lots of craters from that. That’s why it happens every year, because he depressedly keep trying to find her, until now. He, Perses, up there, longing for his soulmate, depressed by his grief of Geminid, until now. And... that’s the end of the story”.
The girl doesn’t know what to say, a long silence is filling up the night again. As the night gets darker, the brighter the stars, and they silently watch and shine above them. Sometimes in a while, one or two meteors are falling, but the girl seems to be drowning in her thoughts. The boy is resting his vocal folds, while patiently waiting for her respond.
“Why does painful thing like that could be so exquisite?”
“I know, right? That’s why i asked you why did you make a wish over sad things like that?”
She turns her head to him “Thanks for the story.”

He smiles, “Anytime”.

Reflective Essay (Behind The Story)
A Pseudo Sci-Fi

To read a good short story is easy, but apparently to write one is a real hard work. Now, I know why authors are being praised, especially those who wrote not just short stories but also novels. One thing that is surely fun is we can put what we think as a story, and for me it was really challenging.

This narrative is the first time i’ve ever written a story by myself. My best friend wants to be a writer, and sometimes I like to give her the ideas or themes. I have a wandering mind, so I often get silly or weird ideas, and I tell my friend to make it as short stories. I don’t like to write even though I love to read, or to be exact I never tried before. Because, I don’t like the conjunction stuffs, and I’m really bad at grammars. But, this task needed me to write one, and it turned out to be fun, and also made me learn.

I got the idea and theme from nowhere, because it was suddenly just popped up in my mind. I was thinking what should I write, and then I remembered that I like celestial stuffs, and I wanted the story to be kind of beautiful science-fiction. I knew to write a sci-fi wouldn’t be easy, but I’m not going to write a super sci-fi like Dee’s Supernova anyway, I just wanted to give some educational values. Also, by this story, I actually wanted to show my confusion for people who still believe in myths. Maybe, the story won’t fit well in Indonesia, because it’s not Indonesian culture to wish upon a star, but still Indonesia has lots of myths, and people actually take it as real important.

The challenge was because I wanted to make a sci-fi, it means that I have to do some research. But, for me that’s okay, because I like to do research and gain knowledges. So, i did google to Nasa, NatGeo, and some sites, and even though I knew this one couldn’t be a source, Wikipedia. To made the celestial elements weren’t that hard actually, but the myths elements were, especially the greek myths. Because, Perseus Constellation was named after the Greek God, and in this story I wanted to imagine it as a person, I thought that I have to know the greek history a bit. At first, I wanted to named the charater as Perseid, because it was going to be Perseid Meteor Shower. But, it turned out that Perseid was the name of Perseus and Andromeda’s children, and they had seven children. So, I just chose the nearest name, Perses, and that’s why I mentioned his six siblings, to make it as Perseid Meteor Shower. That’s why maybe you wouldn’t see the real science stuffs in this one, because I think it would be years if someone really wanted to make a serious sci-fi.

In the end, i learned so much about grammar from this task, and I’m encouraged to write another narrative if I had some ideas. It was a really fun and challenging task to do.
31 Days, 31 Drawings
It is very hard to keep a pen, isn’t it? Well, you better not losing your pen for this, in fact you will need a lot of pens. As we know, October has many unique and important events and one of them happened to be INKtober.
INKtober is a drawing event where everyone is welcome. According to the official website http://inktober.com, it is basically a drawing challenge by doing one ink drawing a day the entire month. This event was created by artist Jake Parker in 2009, as he wrote on his official website the actual purpose was “a challenge to improve my inking skills and develop positive drawing habits”. Now, it has been viral and celebrated as a worldwide event, not only amongst professional but also aspiring artists.
On its official facebook page, INKtober declared itself as a community with 51.462 likers. It also has its official instagram, twitter, tumblr, and other social medias, because social medias are one of the most crucial part of INKtober. There are four rules which are written on its official website:
1.     Make a drawing in ink (you can do a pencil under-drawing if you want).
2.      Post it on tumblr (or Instagram, twitter, facebook, flickr, Pinterest or just pin it on your wall.)
3.     Hashtag it with #inktober
4.     Repeat (you can do it daily, or go the half-marathon route and post every other day, or just do the 5K and post once a week. What ever you decide, just be consistent with it. INKtober is about growing and improving and forming positive habits, so the more you’re consistent the better.
Automatically, #inktober has been a trending topic on every social media every October. On instagram itself, there has been 1.425.818 posts of #inktober.
Bottom line, it is such a great event, especially for aspiring artists. By this event, everyone can share their drawings openly so they can  communicate with others who have the same interests and it may even help them to improve their skills. That’s why, you better keep your pen on October next year!

AKSARA
Aksara (n) letter, characters. Basically, an antique way for saying ‘words’ in some traditional Indonesian Languange, and in this modernized-nowaday-world most antique things are considered for having high values. Collectors are fighting to get some of world’s oldest things, but how about any other old aspects like dance, and in this case, our traditional writing system? Collectors couldn’t snatched it away from us, but time could. So, at least know about your own heritage, after all some knowledge will not hurt your brain.
Ensiklopedi Nusantara stated that there are three transformation stages of aksara based on some ethnic’s languanges. There are Aksara Palawa-Kawi, Aksara Hanacaraka, and Aksara Daerah, as a whole we call those Aksara Nusantara. The most original aksara is Pallawa, which is written mostly in the inscriptions. Pallawa was no longer used because it was modified into some ethnicity languanges such as; Balinese, Sundanese, and many others.
Each traditional aksara has their own unique styles, which brings significant difference from each other. According to wikipedia.com, one of the reasons is because of the writing media that they used such as; antique Sundanese aksara typically has this blunt corner shaped, because back then it was written according to the palmyra leaves’ fibers as the media, meanwhile Kerinci aksara is written with sharp corner, because it used to be written on bamboo.

It is such as shame that nowadays we can only find Aksara Nusantara in very few places such as museum, historical places, and street signs. No one seems to care about how it is written, because sadly it is not relevant to our nowadays modernized life. So, the most easiest thing to do is to speak in traditional languange or write it with the romanize version. After all, nothing’s more beautiful than having the confidence of  showing your true identity.
TRAPPED
IN
COLORS
?

Blue is better for boys, pink is absolutely for girls, agree? It’s already 2016, open up your eyes! In this strict society that we lived in, there is this color stereotypes based on one’s gender. We knew that the society prefers dark colors (blue, green, etc) are for boys, while bright color (especially pink) looks better for girls. Just visit the nearest newborn baby from your relatives, and look what colors their parents chose for the infant’s room and stuffs. Even when we grew up, this stereotyping is far from the word ended, like for example this boring question-statement, “Why are you using pink? You’re a boy!” Why is that? Since when colors become such a strict unwritten rule in our society, and is it actually a big deal?
Firstly, from the eyes of science, let’s think about  an article about “The Meaning Color For Gender” by Natalia Khouw who states that, “Guilford and Smith (1959) found men were generally more tolerant toward achromatic colors than women. Thus, Guilford and Smith proposed that women might be more color-concious and their color tastes more flexible and diverse. Likewise, McInnis and Shearer (1964) found that blue green was more favored among women than men, and women preferred tints more than shades. They also found 56% of men and 76% of women preferred cool colors, and 51% men and 45% women chose bright colors. In a similar study, Plater (1967) found men had a tendency to prefer stronger chromas than women..” To sum it up, maybe it is was just a natural choice that the society choose each colors assigned for each gender, but again isn’t the society are shaped by something more complex?
Before we go into a further confusion, let’s take a look from the history itself. Surprisingly, before World War I happened, precisely in 1918, US Trade publication Farnshaw’s Infants’ Department stated in an article that “The generally accepted rule is pink for the boys, and blue for the girls. The reason is that pink, being a more decided and stronger color, is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl..”  After that, people were giving arguments and discussions about that statement, because before that statement was published there was no such thing about assigned gender. The statement and people’s argumentation gave a big impact later on in 1940, when fashion and product manufacturers decided to advertise the reverse colors for gender, blue is for boys, and pink is for girls.
The effect still exists in parents’ point of view until this exact moment. Why do I say so? To be exact, that is what Aleksandae Makasev, a New York based visual artist and graphic designer says in his article posted on munsell.com, in which I strongly agree. He stated that, “It’s all about the parents. The baby doesn’t care about the color, but it will be raised to care a lot.” We live in a society, with strict written rules and even more strict unwritten rules. Most people are shaped by what people want them to be, their parents, friends, and others. Without realizing it or not, we are finding our way to reach that finish point where we are accepted by our surroundings. In this case, the newborn babies are feed by the society’s rules of what’s good and not good.. Surely, there are some rules that are needed to be doctrinized, but some parents exceed the society’s expectations, and that could go wrong in many ways.
This gender assigned colors’ text purpose is not to conclude what’s correct and what’s wrong, because every problem in this life is different in each individual’s perspective. But, I myself as the writer have been seeing this as a big deal, since at least for me the word ‘stereotyping’ is already not a respectable way of seeing something, especially that we have been facing this stereotyping since we were innocent. Moreover if we think about the fact that nowadays there are people who believe for more than just two genders, how are we going to divide all of this? We can’t put everything in boxes, even though we still have many colors left, and we can’t even force all people in the world to agree on this thing. I want you to have your own argumentation after you finish this text, or if you have a big disapproval on my perspective, just type it on EPH’s official LINE@, and we will finish the confusion.

Title                       : 12 Years a Slave
Director                 : Steve McQueen
Release Date         : November 23, 2013
Rating                    : 8.1 / 10 (IMDb)

How is it feel like when your own life is suddenly taken away by God (e.g. death)? Well, that’s how life works, so deal with it, but how is it when some humans take your life, your freedom, for the sake of their greediness? You must’ve heard about the Black Race slavery that happened in America, and that’s the same thing. 173 years later, McQueen visualized this sensitive issue through his sensational 2013 Golden Globe Award winning the best drama movie entitled 12 Years a Slave.
Where freedom comes from? God or Government? What makes you identify as a free human being? Apparently, Solomon, a free African American man had to live suppressedly as a slave for 12 years before he could finally prove his official letter regarding his freedom state. He was kidnapped and sold to work in cotton plantation for white masters, where his “free man” status didn’t even get acknowledged and couldn’t help him at all. He had to dedicate himself shamelessly as a white’s slave before he met his savior which “of course” also a white man who promised him to get his “official free declaration letter”. Now, you get the idea where freedom comes from in this evil play.

This movie will arouse your critical thinking and sense of humanity, from its two hours duration which packed with the daily life of a slave to “regain” his freedom. This is an obscene reflection of a true event in the past, and steadily, yet blatantly, McQueen portrayed how the state of freedom is (or actually not) everything a man can have, so overall I'd agree with the score of 8/10.

Synopsis
This is a cute romantic love story which takes place in a neighbourhood where there are many “cram schools”. A young man works at a copy shop and is stuck in the daily boring routine of making copies for test papers. On one of these monotonous days, he finds a drawing of a sheep on the back of a piece of test paper, which leads him to an unexpected journey. (mydramalist.com)

At first, i got this movie from my friends and what made me interest is because the main actor, Kai Ko. Maybe you ever watched or heard about him, he is famous for his romance-comedy movie before entitled You Are The Apple of My Eye, as the main character. Based from that movie, so i decided to watch it. Well, the main reason is because he is handsome haha and the movie You Are The Apple is just fun to watch for a teenage girls. Actaully I'm not the kind of a teenage girl who likes to watch romance-drama movies, but You Are The Apple of My Eye is just great with its not over-cliche-romance and comedies between the friendship. It's a different type of romance movie, it's fresh, and if you're a boy i bet you will have fun watching it because there are some boys-things-only in this movie. If you haven't watch it, you should give it a go.

The actors and actress acts well, as they express the love, sad, and confusion for waiting. I like the main girl character whose plays by Guo Shu Yao, she is weird, yet cute on her own way. I love how she patiently counts to one hundred when wait for something to happen, she's unique. For sure, i also loveee the  main boy whose plays by Kai Ko haha. I love when he do nice things to people, with his principle one kindness a day. Also by some side characters story such as; the handsome friedrice man whose apparently the owner of 1314 pager, the weird man whose owned the copy shop, and the money-oriented girl at the office. But i'm still not quite sure about the noodle-man whose like to show up suddenly, because at the very end after the credits the copy shop owner meet him, maybe he is a boss idk.

The plot itself was good. I love to watch a simple slice of life movie like this, not so much tense and dreamy. It's just a slice of life and some flashback moments which explains more about the story, especially the girl's past. Also it was surprising when actually the 1314 pager owner is the fried-rice man, with his tragedic love story. I love how everyone has their own heartbroken past, because in real life everyone all have a moment like that for sure. I thought that the similar case of the main girl and the fried rice man is telling us something, because there are some cases in real life couple whose lived apart and going long distance relationship and finally coudn't handle it because of the distance and trust between them. It simply tells how hard to wait for someone without being really next to each other.

After all, what i really likes about this movie is the cinematography, and some effects such as; the stop-motion at the very beginning and the effect at the end when the students are throwing the paper planes, because it gives some sort of dramatic feels especially when suddenly his ex girlfriend show up from the crowd and his surroundings just stop. It is the moment when the ex girlfriend whose the boy been searching finally came and the effect is just like the time stops as his speechless emotion.

Though overall, i really enjoyed this movie and the philosophy or morals between it. Oh yeah the morals is given by the noodle man when he is telling his past, which he thought some tragedy moments really needs to happened so someone could change or deserve to be better. It is just the same for some of the characters such as; the woman who lost her dog needed to lost it until finally she found more happiness by three kittens that she found, also the main boy needs to left by her girlfriend so he could meet the unique girl after and get some fun in his life. It just simply that bad things happened to us so we could change to be better and deserve better from before.

Well, i quite enjoyed this movie so i couldn't found a lot of stuff to be criticize. One thing that bothering me is why the boy just followed the weird copy shop owner when they first met, maybe he is a bad guy or something. Or maybe i'm just being pessimist. Also, is it okay to draws in the exam paper? If it in Indonesia, i bet we will get scolded. For the people who doesn't like some linear, slice of life, realistic movie, then it won't impress you. It is also not such a cute romantic couple, but they are cute the way they are.
